![]() The Island remains a very natural, quite and easy place to live: Koh Yao Noi and its surroundings gathers in a short distance some of the most interesting things to be discovered in South Thailand, in one of the most beautiful location. On the other hand, Koh Yao Noi did benefit the wealthy economy of Thailand and infrastructures development (roads, telephone lines, electricity, schools, hospital, administration center, post office). Tourism has not been developed on a large scale: Remaining on Koh Yao Noi is a unique opportunity to quietly observe traditional life styles and people genuine activities, and meet with welcoming people. Traditional boat building is also to be seen. Nowadays, local activities are mostly oriented towards agriculture - rice, rubber tree plantations, fruit, palm oil and coconut plantations - and, obviously, fishing: One-half of the inhabitants dedicate to small scale fishing activities Sea farms (fish, shrimps, shells…) have been well developed during the last decade. But the Malay background still prevails: people from Koh Yao still look very different from the majority of Thai people, they speak a particular dialect with many Malay lexical traces, there are skillful sailors and fishermen. These migrants, like all people of South Thailand, have mixed origins (Thai, Mon, Malay, Indian, Chinese). Today's inhabitants of Koh Yao Noi are certainly related to these sea gypsies, but the main historical evidence show that ancestors of Koh Yao people migrated from the East cost of the Malay Peninsula about two centuries ago and did settle both on Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai. This twin Island is even bigger and wilder and offers wonderful spots for trekking.Ī beautiful straight separates the two sisters: According to the legend this straight has been created when a gigantic Naga (mythical dragon) rushed from West to East to marry the Princess of Krabi.įor centuries, the whole marine area between the Island of Phuket and the coast of Krabi used to belong to sea gypsies, each family establishing a home on secluded beaches during the rainy season and sailing the rest of the time from island to island. Its sister - Koh Yao Yai - extends south of Koh Yao Noi. Many new areas have been developed on the islands surrounding Kho Yao Noi and on the northern end of the Island itself. Its broad shape is a triangle of 10 km basis and 12 km high. The island is rad, people friendly and it's much quieter than tonsai (no longtails).Koh Yao Noi, with 4000 inhabitants, is one of the largest islands surrounding Phuket. There will be a trail that takes you to dump wall and from there you can keep walking to the Mitt and big tree. So take a left up a steep road by the gate (it's fine on the motorbikes) and follow it until you're getting close to the last downhill down to the beach. The only way it might work is a bribe, and even then, I think their pockets are very full already and they're done with climbers. This happened apparently cause climbers were swimming in their pools, trying to get away with 'beach allowance' public land. Watchtower and Mitt are both rad.)Īlso, the Paradise resort won't let you through their gate no matter how much sweet talking you do to them. (I know, it sucks, Grateful wall looks soooooo good. ![]() If you climb at any of the inland crags, or more simply, any wall besides Grateful Wall, you should be ok. ![]() Cause yes you could get in trouble if you're spotted climbing. however, basically the rule now is, don't be seen. Obviously they're not patrolling for climbers. What happened on Koh Yao Noi is that some government official that 'banned' it. Approaches require motor bike rides through steep jungle roads, hiking and or hiring a boat. The climbing logistics can be difficult to sort out, but you'll be rewarded with high quality Titanium bolted routes in a peaceful setting. However don't expect the ease of Tonsai/Railey. The beauty surrounding this island is breath taking. Located in the southern end of the Phang Nga bay. This is one of the most low key and tranquil island destinations in Thailand and now hosts many new climbing areas as well. Many new areas have been developed on the islands surrounding Kho Yao Noi and on the northern end of the Island itself.
